The 8.9L displacement refers to the total volume of the engine's cylinders.

This engine is equipped with four cylinders, each having a displacement of 2.225 liters. One of the notable features of the 8.9L diesel engine is its use of a four-stroke combustion cycle. This cycle consists of four distinct stages: intake, compression, combustion, and exhaust. During the intake stroke, the engine draws in air, while the compression stroke compresses this air. The combustion stroke involves injecting fuel into the compressed air, leading to controlled combustion and the generation of power. Finally, the exhaust stroke expels the combustion by-products from the engine. The 8.9L diesel engine utilizes a direct fuel injection system, where fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber at high pressure. This ensures efficient fuel atomization and improved combustion, resulting in enhanced power output and fuel efficiency. The injection timing and quantity are precisely controlled by an electronic engine management system, optimizing performance under various operating conditions.

To support its heavy-duty applications, the 8.9L diesel engine features a robust engine block and cylinder head construction.

These components are typically made of cast iron or aluminum alloy, providing strength, rigidity, and excellent heat dissipation. The engine block houses the cylinders and various internal components, while the cylinder head contains the valves and spark plugs (if it were a gasoline engine).
